Accessibility Services
Lanier Technical College is committed to supporting students with disabilities by providing services that ensure program accessibility and reasonable accommodations. These services are provided in accordance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008.
A disability is a physical or mental condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Major life activities include, but are not limited to, caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, eating, speaking, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, learning, reading, communicating, concentrating, thinking, and working. Major bodily functions are also included. A disability may be permanent or temporary.
Students who wish to receive accommodations at Lanier Technical College are responsible for self-disclosing their disability to the Office of Accessibility Services. Students must provide current documentation of their disability from a qualified professional. Documentation should be based on adult assessment criteria; no more than 3–5 years old, depending on the nature of the disability; clearly identify the diagnosed disability; explain how the disability affects the student's participation in college; state that the requested accommodations are necessary for the student's participation in the College's educational programs.
Accessibility services may include, but are not limited to: registration assistance, campus orientation, testing accommodations proctoring, readers or note-taking assistance, permission to use a recording device, enlarged copies or other accessible materials, assistance obtaining textbooks and other materials in alternative formats, assistive technology and specialized software, interpreter or captioning services, information and referrals to campus and community support services.
Accommodations may change how course material is presented or how a student demonstrates learning; however, they do not change course content, essential learning outcomes, or program requirements established by the Technical College System of Georgia. Accommodations that compromise the academic integrity or essential requirements of a course are not permitted.
For example, in certain mathematics courses, students may not be permitted to use a calculator as an accommodation when doing so would prevent the College from accurately assessing the student's ability to demonstrate required arithmetic competencies.
Lanier Technical College strives to provide reasonable and appropriate resources, services, and auxiliary aids to qualified students with documented disabilities. These supports are intended to provide equitable access to educational programs, social experiences, and career opportunities while maintaining the academic standards and essential requirements of the College's programs.
